A new ally in the fight against breast cancer.

High Resolution now offers women undergoing routine mammograms the latest technology available. The new Selenia™ digital mammography system incorporates revolutionary imaging technology that provides patients with the highest quality of care in the early detection of breast cancer. Digital mammography uses computers and specially designed digital detectors to produce an image that can be displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor, and transmitted and stored just like computer files. The technology allows radiologists to view the images in a matter of seconds. They can adjust brightness, change contrast and zoom in on specific areas to help detect small calcifications, masses and other changes that may be signs of early cancer. Being able to manipulate images is one of the main benefits of digital technology. Additional advantages are:

Reduced need for repeat exams due to under or over exposure of images

Improved diagnostic accuracy over traditional film screen techniques for:
    1. women under 50 years of age
    2. women with particularly dense breast tissue
    3. pre or peri menopausal women

    Less radiation exposure to patients

Reduced time spent in the breast center

To supplement our 100% digital technology, High Resolution also offers digital Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) as part of its comprehensive diagnostic services. CAD provides a "second read" of the digital mammogram by a computer and highlights characteristics commonly associated with breast cancer. When activated, it flags abnormalities to help the radiologist detect early breast cancer. CAD is, in essence, a second set of eyes to support and enhance the radiologist's judgment.

Will it hurt?
The quality of your mammogram greatly depends on the compression of the breast. This allows the breast to flatten so that all of the tissue can be seen in the x-ray. The discomfort of the compression is brief, and is not harmful to your breast. If you feel significant pain, please let your technologist know. You may want to schedule your exam during those times of your menstrual cycle when your breasts are least tender.

How do I prepare for a mammogram?
You should wear a two-piece outfit the day of your exam so you will only need to remove your top. Don't use deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms or near your breasts that day as they may cause artifacts on the x-ray.

How long does a mammogram take?
If you are having a screening mammogram, the exam itself should take about 15 minutes. Diagnostic mammograms take about 30 minutes to complete.

When do I need to get a mammogram?
The American Cancer Society and the American College of Radiology recommend that, beginning by age 40, you should have a screening mammogram every year.

Do I need a doctor's order for my mammogram?
Yes, in order to have your mammogram performed you will need to request an order from your physician and bring it with you on the day of your exam.

How do I make an appointment?
You may call our mammography centralized scheduling number at 559-MAMM (6266).
